Friends and other friends

I was supposed to play D&D on Friday, but I had forgot to tell the guys that I was also asked to a Poker party. I usually blow off the Friday night poker parties, unless I am told that I have to be there by my wife or something like that. Don't get me wrong I love poker, it is a great game and playing it with friends is always entertaining.

I played this time because I am unsure how many times we will be playing in the future at this place. My friend is looking at selling his place and we are unsure if he will even be staying in Michigan. This makes me sad. He is a great friend and I will miss him a lot. No, not in a gay way, but in a good friend who has tried to kill me more times than I can count way.

My other buddies are having problems with getting enough people to play D&D every Friday night. This also makes me sad, as they are awesome fellows. They are intelligent, well learned (even though they all went to BCW...) and fun to be around. We don't share a lot of the same views in politics, religion, or anything else, but that doesn't matter. They are good people and I am proud to be their friend. I kind of wish that I could be there every week, early, with beer and chips, and my best game on. Unfortunately, with the money issues that we are having, I can't do this. I am lucky to be there once a month. This doesn't help them at all. The thing about D&D is it really helps if you have more than 3 people there. Otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose.
Well, the only way I can solve all these problems is win the lotto. Since that's not most likely never going to happen, I am unsure of what to do.
Arrgh!

Sick, sad, puppy

Last Friday, I am took Nessie into Detroit to LaFond Veterinary Hospital for her to get her top left molar removed.

She has had bad breath for a while so last week I did the old 'grab a toothbrush and try to brush the dog's teeth' maneuver.

Between Annie and I, when it comes to brushing the dog's teeth, she only lets me do so and when I say 'do' I mean that I have to sit on her while trying to do so.

When I was brushing this time she was extremely sensitive when I was brushing around her molars, I noticed blood on the brush and she yelped. So taking a closer look I noticed that her molar was split in half and it was a greenish-grey color. Expanding upon my vast biology background (me hurting myself and going to the hospital) I realized that was not a good thing.

So I took her into the Vet's last Monday and my worst fears were realized. She is going to need it removed. The doc is great, he's the one we first brought Nessie to when we got her and she really likes him.

She is now playing with her squeaky ball and running around like the old dog of yore...
I think that she is feeling better, and that the stink was messing up her sniffer. Cause now when we go on walks all she wants to do is smell *everything*!!
Oh well, she's better and life is good in Ann Arbor - sunny and 60!

I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion that Nessie is my kid. This is kind of weird, and I really hope that I don't become one of those old crazy pet people who dress up their animals and convince themselves that the dog/cat/bird is really a child.

Myspace crazyness

I was browsing through myspace yesterday (yes I do have a myspace page) and I noticed that the majority of people who are from my home town, that have escaped, were glad of that fact, although they all had mentioned that they don't mind visiting.
Why would that be? If you are from Bay City, I guess you'd have an answer, I don't have a really good one.

We are supposed to be in store for a really big winter storm. I don't think that it is going to happen. The West Coast of Michigan has been hit pretty hard, we have gotten rain (like we need any more...).

I have a bit of a chest cold. I've been drinking tea and surfing the net for interesting things. (I love Youtube). I could be up north with my "Ballet" buddies. (some of my other friends [and wife] want to protect me from being known as an uber-geek - I play D&D every Friday night, hence "Ballet"), but Annie and I have the Guirie family Christmas party tomorrow. I really enjoy myself at these get togethers. Annie has fun relatives.

Thanksgiving is done, less then a month until Christmas - and things are really sucky!!!
I have no job, Ann Marie is totally stressed out, and to top it off, on Sunday when we were heading back home to Ann Arbor, Focus takes a crap (OF course it was fully loaded up with the X-mas tree on top). Something was going on with the transmission. It was not switching gears properly or something. Arrgghh!!!!

Well, we did have fun at the Glengarry Bhoys on Saturday night.
It was a great show. Celtic Rock, nuff said!!

Beastie Boy kids book

Annie pointed this out to me, I thought it would be a perfect gift for my niece and nephew. A story book of Paul Revere by the Beastie Boys.
Damn, I haven't seen some of those pictures in years. I can remember when "License to ill" came out, I was but a youngster driving 'the Van' and playing B-ball at the Boys Club (it would be a couple of years before that place would be the Boys & Girls Club).
For some reason I remember a Mtv Show that the Beasties did that was set in New York and they had a hand held camera and it was snowing. Funny how there are certain things that you remember - other things (my locker combination from that same year) that are lost for ever...

Do you ever wonder what the hell people are talking about even though they are "supposedly" speaking the same language?
Well, I found this site, to help me rip on some of the male members of my wife's family. I love them, but they just aren't that bright. This way I can cuss them out, but they won't be none the better. (Fantasy Football is fun)
Along this note, the Scots just have a way with the language that makes everyone go "huh". I think that is perfect. More people should just go "Huh" or "Oh" or whatever the hell noise you make whenever you just realized that someone just blitzed you.

Organization of books

I found this website this morning. I think that it is a pretty good idea, especially if you don't have a huge library. But if you do, then it would make organizing said library much easier.
I put in most of my soft covers and some of my hard covers into the database. I don't know if I have the patience to put all of my RPG books. That would be a fricken' huge amount of books.

I think we are going to go see Little Miss Sunshine today at the Michigan Theatre. I have never been there and I am really looking forward to the experience of seeing an "independent" flick here in Ann Arbor -the culture center of Michigan. (Only slightly sarcastic there...)

Friday craziness

I guess that I am now a 'Towny", because now that the students are back in town; I am not having fun. The city just got crazy - bikes, cars, people are all jockeying for the same space on the roads, there are absolutely no parking spots, there are people everywhere downtown. Annie can't be a Towny because she is the cause of the problem, a student!

Oh yeah, I blame her! You hear me woman, you and your kind are ruining my driving fun!

I will not drive into town unless there is some really, really good reason - like picking up my lovely wife! Nooch!

The web site starts off pretty good, but I think the funniest one is the one about taking a trip to Alaska. Annie has heard some some interesting things in town, maybe she will put some up there...

Could this be one of our neighbors??? It would be nice to say that we were normal around here!!! This cat sounds as if he is one interesting dude! I probably have some of his comics. I should really check.

Finished my first week of work, there are a lot of challenges, but nothing that I can't really handle. Things are just very unorganized.

We're BACK

Hey we have Internet access again - AT&T - DSL. It's not as fast as our cable, but it is about half the cost. AT&T has not done much to redeem themselves.
We now have a phone, internet, and electricity. Now what do we get? A subscription to the Ann Arbor news, the Detroit Free Press?
No cable. I miss it very little. The only shows that I watch with regularity are Battlestar Galactica, SG-Atlantis, Scrubs, Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends, and.. um... I guess that's about it.

No longer in Mid Michigan

Because we have moved I thought that I should update and give the old blog a change. So here is the new and 'improved' site.

We have pretty much moved into our new place, we are still working on getting a phone and Internet. (Right now AT&T is not rating too high on my scale of companies that I like)

Ann Arbor is going to be great, I hope. There are a bunch of great restaurants with a ton of variety. The town is very person friendly and we have been exploring on the bus system. WHOOT! Nessie is not that crazy about the place but she is getting comfortable with her surroundings.

I have a new job in Jackson, it is about a 30 minute drive from our condo. I will be a quality engineer. I am really excited about this. The pay is really good and I am hoping that I will not be sitting down in the middle of a hornets nest, like I did the last time I worked as a QE.

Gone for a week or so

My parents took Annie out for her birthday, Sunday, (Yeah I know that her birthday was on Thursday - they were out of town) to Los Quatro Amigos. Well, it was mentioned to the server that we were celebrating said occasion and at the end of the meal, they came out with a sombrero and put it on AM and sang happy birthday to her. I have never seen her sooo red. It was very funny and she really did look cute.
We are heading down to A^2 in a little while to move in the first of our stuff. It is never too hot to move! We will also be cleaning and checking out the pad so to speak. SO I will post pictures when I return.

Back From the North

We got Ann Marie's mother almost all moved in. At least we have almost all of her stuff with in walking distance of where it will evetrally go. Yeah. The stuffes that I moved were mostly big and heavy. I will recover. My shoulder is still a little sore, but I can use it.

There were 18 people there. 10 kids, 8 adults. A lot of screaming, playing, fighting, and threats.

This week I was given a mission from Annie. The mission was to find a place in Ann Arbor where this future leader in the geriatric world could live, sleep and study. The good news is that I have found said place and it is nice.
Besides a roof, walls, bedroom, and a place to cook, this place comes with a clubhouse that houses a pool, a sauna, a workout area and an upstairs 'meeting' area.
The condo is located about 2 miles away from Michigan Stadium. About 3 miles from where Annie will be attending her classes. Luckily there is a bus stop right in front of our new place and Michigan students get to ride the bus for free.
Yeah public transit. While down in A^2 i noticed something quite odd, this was people waiting at bus stops. Lots of people waiting at bus stops. Living in BC we have busses but there are almost never anyone on them and you almost never see anyone waiting at a bus stop.
There will be some adjustments to this move. Will Annie be able to wait for 10 minutes for a bus without killing someone? Will Annie find inner peace and zen while riding the bus? Will Ann Marie ever get her hair licked???

We just got back from a day of travel. Went to Lake City to visit the relatives. Lots of good food, drink, and conversation. One thing that I really noticed this year that there were tons of little-ones. They were driving their bikes around like they owned the place. There must of been 8 or 9 of these kids.

We are heading back to Detroit this weekend for another wedding. While down there we will visit with friends. Sounds exciting?
Sorry, my life in not that exciting right now. As soon as something happens I will be sure to let you all know.
St Stan's was great. I did forget my ID, so they almost didn't let me in. The people running security were worried that if the police were to check that they would get into trouble. Good thing that I knew the sheriff who was working. He went to High School with me. Brandon has cleaned up, no more angry leprechaun.

St Stans

Tonight is the start of St Stan's polish festival in Bay City.
Polka and Beer. Can it get any better??? I think not.
We usually go Saturday night, but this year due to one of Annie's inconsiderate cousin's planning a wedding on a Friday night, we will not be here this weekend.
Annie doesn't get to see her family all that much so we will be spending the weekend with friends.

Ok, to be totally selfish this is sooo what I want for Christmas. Who wouldn't want one of these babies??? I would so hang it from my ceilings. The wife be damned!!! (I think I may of said something like that before taking the picture below) hee hee!

Just got back from playing my first round of golf for the year.
If you want to know how I did, let us just say that I will need to play about 12 or so more rounds before I even get close to mention how well I did.
Charlie, Cliffe, and I went to Valley View Farm golf - they have a $15 twilight golf from 6 to dark. We got 18 holes in - a little less then a dollar a hole. Not too shabby.

I have a great friend, Claudine Jones, who is involved with the San Diego Rock-n-Roll Marathon for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. She is running this marathon in order to raise funds and awareness for the L & L society.
Now those of you who know me, know that my mom has Cancer and also that my wife lost her Aunt to another form of this disease. So, this is something that I am very passionent about. IF we can find the cure to one form we will be that much closer to finding the cure to all types of this horrible disease.

Now that spring is upon us here in Michigan (3 days without snow - temps in the 40's). There are some important rules to cruising around in the car that should be covered. Well,
Things are just hunky dory right now. Classes have started. Subbing a little. (Not enough though) and I still have a small cold. Annie is doing well, Nessie also. Grandma is fretting about everything though. She sees a touch of snow and starts worrying about AnnMarie driving. Ugh! I love my grandma, but the worrying is driving me crazy!!! She was suposed to go down to Val's for the past month, but she keeps on putting it off. Weather, cold, etc. Ugh squared!

Wow, what a Christmas. Happy Boxing day to our friends in England/Canada, and Happy Chanuakah to everyone.
Today we (Annie, Grandma, Nessie and I are just sitting around and trying to overcome this damn cold. It has knocked the fight out of me.
Speaking of knocking the fight out of someone. I came across this and thought that it was one of the best questions I have ever heard.

The question: How many 5 year-olds could you take on at once?

The specifics:
- You are in an enclosed area, roughly the size of a basketball court. There are no foreign objects.
- You are not allowed to touch a wall.
- When you are knocked unconscious, you lose. When they are all knocked unconscious, they lose. Once a kid is knocked unconscious, that kid is "out."
- I (or someone else intent on seeing to it you fail) get to choose the kids from a pool that is twice the size of your magic number. The pool will be 50/50 in terms of gender and will have no discernable abnormalities in terms of demographics, other than they are all healthy Americans.
- The kids receive one day of training from hand-to-hand combat experts who will train them specifically to team up to take down one adult. You will receive one hour of "counter-tactics" training.
- There is no protective padding for any combatant other than the standard-issue cup.
* The kids are motivated enough to not get scared, regardless of the bloodshed. Even the very last one will give it his/her best to take you down.

Since when is an invasion of privacy a necessary step for anything but tyranny and oppression. How does that justify anything?
Mistakes happen - what happens when you get a false positive reading or a false negitive? How does that protect anyone. We really need to get over this paranoia over everything. Drugs - they are out there. Sex - people do it. Porn - it's there. Terrorists - they are there. We do not have to give up our rights and our diginaty just because some people feel uncomfortable about these things (or that others want to dictate what it is we can do.)
But then again who am I? We are supposed to be a free society. Why can’t we act that way?

Well now, fall is officially here, it is now time to put away all of my hawian shirts and toss the sandels into the back of the closet. Look for all the sweaters that are in the storage unit and wait until that first flake of snow.

It is a drab day at SVSU, I have a test in 45 minutes - I'm just clearing my mind of all the non-math stuff right now. Rained like a fiend yesterday, and has drizzled on and off today. (Did I close my window???)

I subbed every day last week. It was a lot of fun. I was at Bay City Western Middle School for a Kevin Derocher - who is married to my good friend Carla - who just had a baby!! Seventh grade science. I love science. It is fun! I don't like repeating myself 4 gazillion times. It became quite funny when I would say something, have to repeat it 4 times and then the kids would get it. You have to be very patient when teaching middle school kids.

Going to a wedding this weekend. Going to sport the kilt.

School is going well, as is Annies'. Next big thing - getting high speed internet installed at grandmothers.
We need it for school. Need it quite badly.

I have a paper due on Wednesday on a book called Stolen Childhood. It was not the best book I have read about slavery. I feel that it didn't do a very good job on comparing and contrasting the differences in the way that people lived in the 19th century. I don't know what I was looking for in this book, but I think the author tried to tell too much in a too big of time. Was the life of a slave child the same on the plantations of Lousianna as the life in the rice fields of South Carolina? In 1800 compared to just after the Civil War? How were the poor white farmers of this time living? Does that matter? My instructor said no, but I think that it may. If they were more similar then not, then did the rich use the whites to strengthen the institution of slavery. "Look here son, you may have it bad, but at least you are not a slave". When in truth most of the poor white farmers where as much tied to the land as the black families. There should of been more research done for this book and it could of told a better story of the differences between the poor whites and the slaves. And it could of stayed on it's topic of the plight of slave youths.

I am in Detroit. I was supposed to go home this morning but couldn't get out of Detroit.
I want to go home, but it looks as if I won't be home until tonight.

First of all: Happy September,
Secondly: I Started classes yesterday.
I am only taking 2 classes this semester. I have had some "issues" that I need to deal with and I really don't want my school to suffer.

I am really excited about my classes, I have Linear algebra and African American History.
The linear class I have a couple of buds in there and I know the stuff. Math has always fascinated me, I love how it looks all chaotic at times and then BAM out comes this nice little answer.

The African American history class looks to be fascinating. It is something that we should all know about, especially those of us who will be going into teaching.
The instructors has all ready got the class questioning what they see, read, and hear in today's news. This is very important - not enough people think for themselves and let themselves be blindly led. I guess all that I am saying people is think about what it is that you are watching/listening too/or reading. Who wrote it, who would gain/lose from this information and what is the other side of the story.

I hope that everyone has a safe and happy Labor Day.
Plus remember what it represents while you are with your family.

School is coming up

Well, things are still going as well as they ever have. School is starting up and that has us pretty excited.

Last Sunday we went to a 'vintage' Base Ball Game in Auburn. This was our second game and let me tell you it was a hoot. This is how base ball should be played, kids running around, $.50 bags of peanuts, people just enjoying the game, the sun, and announcement of "$7 gets you a gallon bag of pork" over the loud speakers. If you are a fan of the game I think that you should head out and check this out.

Well - long time no type.

July was not kind to us. I really don't want to get into too much detail, but let us just say that I never want to have a month like that again. Things have to be picking up and I hope that we have weathered the cosmic yang, in order to get the grand ying.

Annie just started a new job, something that relates to what she is studying in school. It is second shift so we don't see very much of each other, it will only get worse when school starts when she is at CMU, going to her internship and me doing much the same.

The weather -- hot and muggy.

Grandma has been at Vals for the past week, so we have had the house to our selves - that is really nice. The rest of the family is up north in Harrisville so we are watching Laney and Bandito.

What a boring blog. Ugh! I suck.

His name is Chalmer Alexander Young (CAY); 8 lbs, 8 oz; 22 inches long, (or is it tall - I am unsure about that) and both baby and mother are doing fine.

We are back from our trip to the North lands. We had a great time, saw a lot of beautiful sights and spent some quality time with Ma Hoch. I wish that I had my digital camera, but it was the one thing that I forgot. Oh well, we will bring it up this next weekend.

Ok, I am now done with my exams. Now, I have to finish getting ready to move. My wife and I are moving to my Grandmothers house this weekend. It will be a little difficult adjusting for both parties, but I think that it will work out great!! (no sarcasm, I'm being serious)

Nessie is getting a bath right now, she just ran in here like a bat out of hell, Annie running in after her. Wow!

Survived my birthday. Nothing to report. Went to D-town and hung out with family.

Spring is here. It is in the low 60's and sunny. Yeah, about time.

Grandma is home from Escanaba. She had fun.
Parents will be heading home from Florida in a week or so.

I think I will be giving up on any NCAA tournament picks in the future. This year I think I am at 70% correct. I always do well in the first 2 rounds but then I fall apart. I think I will just enjoy the basketball. (Not that I am gambling, for that would be illegal)

Top o' the mornin' to ya. As you all know, it is St. Patricks day today. The sad news is that I am not down at the Gaelic league, making fun of all the Irish. (the Irish are just jealous of us Scots, for we have actually conquered the bloody English). When we lived in Ferndale, Annie and I would come down with a case of Irish Flu, call in sick to work, and head down to Corktown for a day of Corn Beef, cabbage, and Guinness. Ahh, the good old days when I had a job and money. Annie did make some corn beef today though, I can not wait until lunch time...
